세인트 루시아   Saint Lucia

카리브해 제일의 휴양지인 세인트 루시아 (Saint Lucia)는

1502년 콜럼버스가 발견하였으며

그후 1605년과 1638년 영국인에
의한 이민이 시도되었으나

모두 실패하고, 이어 프랑스인에 의한 이민이 시작되었다.

1814년 파리조약의 체결에 의해 영국령으로 결정되어 영국이 직접 통치하였다.

영국 통치가 시작되고 150년 후인 1967년 3월 세인트루시아는

영국으로부터 외교와 방위의 일부를 제외한 내정자치권을 획득하고

영국령 서인도 연합주의 한 주(州)가
되었다.

그후 1978년 12월 영국의회가 그 독립을 승인하여

이듬해 2월 (22일) 영국연방의 일원으로 정식 독립하였다.

면적  617㎢    인구  154,366명 (2000년)
